From the Ground Up
Taft's 2021 field production tells the story of mankind's quest not to expand outwards, but upwards. At the turn of the 20th century, cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, and New York were becoming so densely populated, that the only choice was to build up. Soon, a competition broke out of who could build the most mammoth and intricate skylines. Fueled by the advancement of technology, these architectural masterpieces began to rise in cities, only to be out-built by another towering skyscraper made of cold, hard metal.
In August of 2021, the Taft Band will tell the story of America's push in 1920 to out-work, out-build, and out climb one another into the night sky as we perform our feature production, "From the Ground Up". Using George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Summertime", John Mackey's "Metal" (from Concerto for Soprano Saxophone), Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City", and Steve Reich's "New York Counterpoint", the Taft Band and Color Guard will take you on a journey straight up as we continue building into the sky, and show you that home is truly where you build it!
